The Regione Lazio - Regional Councillorship for Economic Development, Research, Innovation and Tourism - and an enterprise consortium headed by Telespazio and Alcatel Alenia Spazio (a Finmeccanica Group Company), with the operative support of Filas, have created the Galileo Test Range (GTR): a permanent laboratory for the validation of the Galileo Satellite System signal and the development of navigation and positioning applications.
The GTR initiative is implemented in the Aerospace Technological District (DTA) the first Italian Aerospace District created through an agreement amongst the Regione Lazio (with the operative aid of Filas), the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Education, University and Research to promote the full development of the industrial potential in this sector. The agreement was finalized in a memorandum of understanding between the Regione Lazio and Finmeccanica.
In particular, the GTR will conduct experiments and analyses on the Galileo Satellite System signal focusing both on institutional applications (public agencies, European and Italian space agencies, universities, research centres and scientific communities) and private applications in the industry and services sectors.
The Galileo Test Range will also promote the development of device prototypes aimed at mass-market consumption, professional use and life-safety applications. These include passenger and freight transportation (airplanes, trains, ships and vehicle transport), emergency services (ambulances, police, firemen, etc.) and security (ATM, VTS, road tolling, etc.). The laboratory will also provide all necessary certification - a crucial aspect especially for all the activities related to life safety applications.
The GTR is a fundamental tool for the development and full exploitation of important competencies (industry, research and university) present in Lazio in the area of satellite navigation and which will involve, among others, the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and ENAV, the national air traffic control agency.
Naturally, the GTR represents a strong competitive element for the Italian aerospace sector and an important factor for the candidature of Rome to host the Galileo Supervisory Authority. The GTR project will greatly benefit the area around the city of Rome, the Lazio region and Italy in their bid to develop a reference district for the European Space Sector as well as an area of international competitive excellence.
The GTR will allow the area of Rome, Lazio and all of Italy to strengthen its candidature and create an area of international excellence as a reference node for the space sector.
