The Lazio Region Earmarks € 32.5 million for Medical Research

Councillor Mancini emphasizes that this is an important best practice to support projects of excellence

New technologies to fight tumors (especially ocular melanomas), the creation of a regenerative medicine centre to address transplant rejection and the use of adult stem cells. These are just a few of the fronts along which the Lazio Region is moving to provide support to applied medical research.

The Regional council lead by President Marazzo has officially approved the proposal made by Claudio Mancini, Councillor for Economic Development, Research, Innovation and Tourism, concerning financing for research and experimental development in the medical sector for 2008.

Thirty-two and a half million euro have been earmarked for medical research over the period 2008-2011 (with an increase of €2.5 million on the initial sum). The fund, which will be managed by Filas, is aimed at projects that will be run with universities, research organisms and enterprises in the medical sector.

In greater detail, 11 milion euro have been allocated for an initial project underway with Enea to create a linear accelerator for proton therapy. This is a highly innovative system and the only one of its kind in central and southern Italy. It will be implemented in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and Ifo Regina Elena in order to cure ocular melanoma and other tumor pathologies through a less invasive technique than traditional radiotherapy.

Two million euro are allocated for experimental development projects on new lines of adult stem cells that will organized through memoranda of agreement with Research and Cure Institutes (IRCCs).

15 million euro are reserved for the Lazio Region Bioscience Technological District for select research and development projects promoted by enterprises in collaboration with universities and research organisms.

4.5 million euro have been allocated to the University of Rome Tor Vergata to create a multi-purpose center for regenerative medicine.

“These investments,” underlines Economic Development, Research, Innovation and Tourism Councillor Claudio Mancini, “will help us to fuel projects of excellence thanks to agreements with large research centres that represent excellence not only in Lazio, but throughout the country. Moreover, we are also investing in a strategic sector, bioscience. This is a perfect example of a best practice in medical research for the development of innovative therapies, fully supported by the Lazio Region.”
