A Life Sciences Technology Cluster in Lazio |

Lazio turns to biology, research and new technologies thanks to new funding that has allowed the creation of the DTB – the Lazio Biosciences Technology District. The DTB aims to promote innovation in the life sciences sector and, in particular, in the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors.
As had been proposed by Claudio Mancini, Lazio Region Councillor for Economic Development, Research, Innovation and Tourism, the regional council allotted 37 million euro to finance the new cluster, which will also receive €10,400,000 from Inter-ministerial Committee for Economic Planning (CIPE) and a further 30 million euro from the Ministry of University and Research. In total, research in Lazio will receive a major boost totalling nearly 78 million euro.
The cluster, that has been given the go ahead following the signature of an agreement between the Lazio Region and the Ministry of University and Research and the Ministry for Economic Development, aims to create a networked research, training and production system in contact with national and international cases of excellence. Filas has been appointed to coordinate the preparatory work for the creation of the cluster.
In a difficult context for Italian research, Councillor Mancini pointed out, the Lazio Region has a strong commitment to promote and develop the life sciences sector. The funds allotted to the DTB represent 50% of the resources available for health research in addition to co-financing by EBRI (the European Brain Research Institute) for neurosciences and financing from the Fund for Scientific Research.
The objective of the DTB, the councillor explained, is to fully exploit all scientific research in the productive sphere so that enterprises will lean towards applied research and innovation to increase their competitiveness.
